Coverage options for families
A family Marketplace plan
You can cover your whole household on one Marketplace plan. Depending on your household size and income, you may qualify for premium tax credits that lower your monthly cost.
Coverage for kids through Medicaid or CHIP
Depending on your income and state, your children may qualify for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), even if adults in the household don’t. When you apply through the Marketplace, you’ll find out whether anyone in your family qualifies.
Young adults up to age 26
Plans that offer dependent coverage generally must allow children to stay on a parent’s plan until they turn 26, even if they’re married, not living at home, or not financially dependent.
When family coverage through work is expensive
If one parent’s job offers family coverage but it’s costly, other family members may still qualify for Marketplace savings under rules updated in 2023. It’s worth comparing both options.
What to compare in a family plan
- Deductibles. Family plans often have both an individual deductible and a family deductible. Know which one applies before coverage kicks in.
- Maximum out-of-pocket. This is the most your family would pay for covered care in a year, and an important number in a tough year.
- Pediatricians and hospitals. Make sure your children’s doctors and nearby children’s hospitals are in network.
- Dental and vision for kids. Pediatric dental and vision are essential benefits under the ACA, but they may be included or sold as a separate plan.
- Prescriptions. Check that everyone’s regular medications are covered.
Life changes that let you enroll
Having a baby, adopting, getting married, losing other coverage, or moving can open a special enrollment period, usually 60 days, so you can enroll or change plans outside of open enrollment. Coverage for a new baby can generally start from the date of birth if you enroll in time.
